Wow….this is so very important.  Thanks for taking the time to read this and taking the time to check on your special young person.; MSN Live Spaces;; the list goes on….and I’ve listed a bunch of them at the end of this article to help you to find all them and help you discover if your special young person has a "space" out there.
Now, why should you care?
We received a call this morning from a very dear friend who received a call around midnight January 14th that he was both glad to get and sad to get.  Glad in that he received the call in time to get help for his 16 year old son, but sad that it appears his son is in need of help.
The call was from the parent of one of his child’s friends.  They simply asked if he had ever looked at his son’s "My Space."  His answer was "No."  Keep in mind this is an extremely involved parent and extremely technically saavy parent.  He had never looked at his son’s "MySpace."
He was quite surprised and disturbed to find his son had been having suicidal thoughts and discussing them on line.  He also found some other very disturbing things about his son.  The question is of course, was this just normal, or is there something seriously wrong here.  I do not believe a parent can afford to ignore such things and just chalk it up as "normal" teen stuff.  This is especially true with some of the additional comments his son had posted.
So, what am I asking?  If there are any special young persons in your life, please check on them to see what they are revealing about themselves on the social networking sites.  Not only may they be revealing such thoughts, but they may be revealing way too much personal information that a predator could use to get at them.
Am I over-reacting to this?  Perhaps, but I would rather err on the side of caution than to be attending a niece or nephew’s funeral…or perhaps helping search for a missing young person.
We also posted an article today on Rules for Safer Computing that was written some time back.  If you also wish to read "The Computer Guy’s Rules for Safer Computing" then follow this link:!3E351816740E32BA!1131.entry
